Hi All, just a quick question here, which antenna is best to use given the choice of a G5RV or Carolina Windom? Does anyone know any pitfalls or probs with either one?

I don't know anythign about the Carolina Windom when we were first license we did have a G5RV (hidden) in our attic it worked well enough.

We have a G5RV but it has to be put up yet so not sure how well it will work....will have to wait and see..lol. We have heard lots of good reports about the Carolina Windom and I think it is one Den is contemplating on trying in the future.

We use a G2DM trapped dipole (or we did before the recent strong winds damaged it!) and has served ue well on most HF bands for about 15 years.

I hope the next antenna for HF Bands serves you as well as the G2DM did Maureen. It's such a shame that the recent strong winds has done much damage to lots of radio amateur's antennas. I know our Cobwell fell victim to them.

Den: This last summer during Field Day I spent all night net control op on phone with several antennas, Windom, G5RV, Delta Loop, Ground mounted verticals. I was wondering the exact same question when I arrived, and when I left Sunday pm, I saw no difference on 20, 40 and 75 meter bands between those two. However I noticed a HUGE difference with the loop, (much quieter) that's the reason I have a loop up at home now. The Windom and G5RV were just about identical heights approx. 15 feet, broadsided East and West. You might be able to see those antennas in these pictures, I haven't really looked for antennas. www.bcara.org/fd2006.html '73 kc9gld

Hi Harley, That looked like a fun day you had there, one of the reasons i asked about the 2 antennae was. One of my HF rigs is a YAESU FT101Z which is a valve rig so i thought the g5rv would make a classic set up complete. The problem is though our garden is very small and as a g5rv is 102' flat top it won't fit. So i was thinking of making it half size and using 80mtr traps, do you think this would perform ok?

Replacing physical length with capacitance will most certainly work just not as effieciently. Don't buy or wind traps yet, let me check my "avalanch closet" at home, I think I have a pair. As a matter of fact I know I do, let me check tonight I'll drag them out @ mail them to you. Need to get rid of some of that junk anyway! They're brand new, they were given to me for free from a cb'er who didn't know what they were. If you're current on QRZ I'll just mail them to that address. Sounds like you are dealing with the same issues as Wayne m3jzt with a small garden. This the radio you're talking about having? If so that's classic! www.rigpix.com/yaesu/ft101zd.htm '73 my friend Harley kc9gld (kc9goodlittledoggie)

Hi Harley, Thank you very much for kindness, i really appreciate it. Yes that is the rig i have along with the FC-902 matching atu, for such an old radio it has the best recieve i have heard in a long while. Our other HF rig is a YAESU FT-100, which i like to use in the car with an ATAS-100 antenna. We also have various portables like the FT817ND, TRIO-2300 and handhelds which we use portable from hill or mountain tops for SOTA activations.
73's best wishes de Den.
