My car has been off the road for a while. It just died. Seems like the engine has ceased up. There were no signs, no warning lights it just packed up and died. A friend had a look at it and he is stumped. Today a mechanic type person came and had a look at it and he said the engine is definitely ceased. He is going to call round he contacts and see how much an engine is going to be and let me know how much it is going to cost all together. Our car is our lifeline and without it we have been pretty much trapped so I hope it isn't going to cost the earth to get it up and running again but I bet it isn't going to be cheap either. Another friend is going to come by and have a look tonight so will keep you all posted as to what the outcome is. Will the car be ressurrected or will it go to scrap in the end and me left without a leg to stand on

Thanks Andy, I am very nervous about what the price might be because if it is over a certain amount then I may well not be able to afford to get it sorted. I am just hoping the gods of my finances smile upon me and and let me have my car back running and happy

Oh no! I hope it is not too expensive! My friend just needed to have the engine replaced in her car( she was driving around with only 2 quarts of oil ( takes 4) cost her $5000!! ( think that is about £2500) my car is 11 years old Hubby's truck is only 3 years old. Hopefully in late fall winter we can get me a new car.

My goodness that was expensive Yes you are about right with the conversion figures. I am not hoping to get a new one but a reconditioned one is the best I can hope for. Just waiting for the quote and then I will know the extent of the damage. My car was about 5 years old. There was no sign of any leaking as it is something I checked fairly regularly so what on earth went on I haven't a clue. Hopefully all will be well again soon

She got a reconditioned engine a brand new one would have been even more. Her car is 6 years old Hey Renae-I thought the rule was Mama gets the newer car?! (laff-o-l) Wadda ya gonna get when you do get yours? well his other truck was 13 years old at the time with almost 200,000 miles on it, ended up with transmission repair ( $2500/£1250) then the within two months needed the rear end needed to be repaired another ($2700/£1350) My car is 11 years old with 137,000 miles on it so I am up next ;D

Hi Frank, My car is a Vauxhaul Zafira Comfort 1600cc. 2002 first registered. There were no signs or noises that indicated that something may be wrong or going wrong. There were no warning lights either so was a bit shocked when I was told the engine had ceased. Once it had broken down a friend towed it with another friend sat at the wheel and he tried bump starting it and then apparently the one driving heard a crack sound. Anyways to cut a long story short it does look like we are going to have a reconditioned engine and I have been told by one person it may be about £450.00 I am still waiting for a quote from the guy who looked at it this afternoon though. Sheesh what a strife being without the car.

no warning that is scary! seems like reconditioned engines in UK are a lot cheaper than here in the US! my friends car was shaking a lot so she added 2 quarts of oil it was still shaking took it to the repair shop. I check my fluids weekly since I have an older car.

My first guess (not that it matters now) is the timing belt which coordinates the upper to lower engine. If true, that "crack" heard was valves colliding with pistons because they run opposed to each other and when that belt goes it's like a train wreck-hence siezed-sorry Zo.

That's really bad luck if you do need a new engine. Your car is not old, it's a good manufacturer. Engines are usually far more reliable than they used to be (modern oils and fuel make a huge difference), and should give you 100,000+ miles.

But cars now days are built a lot better than in the past and last a lot longer. My car I am driving now has 137,000 miles on it is going on 11 years old it still ok The truck Dave had before this one had close to 200,000 miles on it was over 13 years old before we had to get rid of it. we buy our cars new keep them a long tie at least 10 years then when they turn into a money pit we get a new one.

I am not familiar with that make of car. Vauxhall are a long time U.K. subsiduary of GM... the cars are different from the U.S, being designed for and made in Europe (aka Opel in Europe). The Zafira is one of the most popular cars in the U.K. cheers, Andy

I would like one but it is way out of my price range that is for sure. Rolls Royce for sure is out of my price Range I have alway driven Chevys Dave has had Chevy, Ford, Pontiac and now a Nissan, the only reason we have the Nissan Truck is my friend's daughter in law was working for Nissan at the time let us use her employee discount , we got a brand new truck for a fantastic price. But she no longer works for Nissan so we won't be able to use that when time for my new car. I am sure with American cars that are sold in Europe they have to be built a bit different, the gas tank gauge with Liters more prominent than gallons, the steering wheel on the opposite side, parts made using the metric system etc.

Thanks Everyone for all your input on this one. I have had two quotes for recon engines, £450 and £500 I suspect the first will not include costs for doing the work as it is a personal friend and I am sure he won't charge me for the work and the second is just for the engine to have the work done it will cost me a total of £700 so its just a case of which offer to go for and the getting together of the finances. I suspect it will take me about a month and a half at most to get the money together but it will mean a hard month for the rest of the finances etc. Vauxhaul are normally pretty good cars, I think I was unlucky but I suspect that once the job is done and the car is up and running things will be ok there onwards. Will be learning what to listen and look for in future and what the timing belt going should sound like as I really didn't hear anything that indicated it might be on the way out. I feel a little bit foolish but what can you do when you just don't hear anything or see anything that might indicate something is wrong even the warning lights on the car didn't come on. Sheesh! Thanks again everyone for your input

It's very rare to see a U.S. made car in the U.K... Chrysler have had a try, but if you see one it's a real enthusiast for U.S. cars driving it. Ford and GM dominate our car market with their own subsiduaries over here anyway... in fact up until a few weeks ago, Ford owned Jaguar and Land Rover. There are lots of 'brands' but just a few parent companies I was in LA a couple of years ago and it was great to see so many 'British' Minis ... but again, they are owned by BMW I've never been too fussed what I drive as long as it gets me there... and has a multi change cd and climate control cheers, Andy

Could've been worse, Zo. Having someone do it free of charge will save a huge amount... labour is the killer in all garage bills.

We have all sorts of cars here in the US GM, Ford, Chrysler, BMW, Mercedes,All the Japanese Cars ( Nissan, Toyota, Hinda ect. have those Kia's ( I think that is Korean ? ?) I have no clue which is most popular I see many manufacturers Thanks Everyone for all your input on this one.
