Barnard Castle was a Norman earth ringwork fortress, founded by Guy de Baliol. Built against the steep banks of the River Tees, the massive 12th century stone castle, was founded by Bernard de Baliol. This complex site, is divided into four walled and ditched baileys, with the original main gate in the privately owned Outer Ward. You enter the Town Ward, through the north gatehouse and then into the Middle Ward, over a wide ditch, which was once wet. In the Inner Ward, is the Round Tower, which stands on the foundations of an earlier square keep. Protected by the Great Ditch, it was the original ringwork and has an impressive range of lodgings. Barnard Castle is located in the town centre, off Galgate. 25 miles south-west of Durham, on the A688. To be activated by the Blackpool ARS in 2007...........

I saw some very nice looking buildings in Durham on the way back from my first visit to Orkney with my mum on the train a couple of years ago. In fact the whole area looked lovely.

There are loads of places in Northumberland with Castles, Pele towers, etc. Maybe when the better weather comes I could activate some /M. Need to get the weather right, though!

I agree Maureen, the weather does determine how enjoyable a day may end up or not as the case may be.
