In 1086 Roger de Poitou, third son of a cousin of William the Conqueror, started building the Castle, probably using stone left on the hilltop from the late-Roman Fort. The first phase was completed in 1090. The Castle now incorporates a prison within its walls and held the trials for the Birmingham 6, famous for burning the Pendle witches and numerous hangings. Information can be found at the link below: www.priory.lancs.ac.uk/castle.htmlThe Blackpool group hope to activate the castle in the coming months.

Oooops in old'en day's I could have been hanged as a witch or burned. I am from Pendle and the hill has loomed in the distance wherever I have lived all my life. Some people say that Pendle Hill somehow has a pull on folk and whenever they move away they cannot help but be pulled back to the safety of the hill's shadow. Whenever we go away from pendle on an outing or holiday etc...The Hill is the first thing we look for when we get nearer to home...wonder if that has anything to do with it...lol Excellent Picture Ian. Hope to hear Blackpool Amateur Group Activating Lancaster Castle.
