Ex-British Army Senior NCO, Queens Lancashire Regiment 22 years. Now living in Blackpool my home town. I have the following interests:- Amateur Radio through the Blackpool Amateur Radio Society - Summits On The Air (SOTA) all aspects of portable radio operation/Walking. Passed M3 License in June 2003 receiving callsign M3EDX but only started operating end of June 2004.However,passed my Intermediate Licence on 9th November 04 and received the callsign 2E0EDX. My Rigs at this time consist of:- Yaesu FT-8900R quad bander into a Moonraker BM 1000 Co-Linear Tri-Bander vertical mounted at about 42 feet, this rig is used both in the shack and when mobile. HF rigs consist of a Kenwood TS-520SE & a KW Ten-Tec Omni C. The TS-520SE & Ten-Tec are set up using a Cobwebb Omni Directional, full size half wave dipole at around 42 feet. Various handhelds are also in the arsenal on 2m/4m & 70cms. Joined SOTA (Summits On The Air) and have purchased a SOTA pole and 3 Element 2 m Yagi beam and more recently acquired a Yaesu FT-290 Mk2 radio in line with a linear amplifier with pre amp to enable me to activate on the summits. I enjoy working SOTA Activators and have just gained triple Shack Sloth status with over 3000 Chaser points.Other beams consist of an 8EL Maspro portable beam and a 9EL Tonna. The purchase of an FT-857 is imminent which will allow me onto the HF bandswhile portable. Hoping to operate in 2007 as ZB2/2E0EDX/P from the Rock of Gibraltar. I run two forums Toatally Portable dedicated to portable radio operation and the Blackpool Amateur Radio Society forum. Details available on QRZ.com and my forum profile.

Hi Ian, Thanks for Joining and Thanks for posting so many interesting topic's on the various boards. It's much appreciated. You have certainly got a Radio Shack to be proud of and definately will be the envy of many...I will be getting out my log book because I too am sure I have worked you in the past...but sometimes similar callsigns seem to melt into one...lol. Den and Myself are presently taking a course for the 2E0 exam which we hope to be sitting at the end of Jan beginning of Feb...Look forward to working you in the future...Have a Happy New Year and hope it brings you much in the way of happiness...

Hi Den
RAF eh, well SOTA and an adventurous hobby will be right up your street. Amazing that the antennas we use are the same and I certainly endorse the Cobwebb, one of the best purchases I've made to date. XYL has just returned from town, picked up my new 2m 3el SOTA beam and pole, Postman could'nt deliver it this morning so she had to pick it up from the GPO, again another excellent buy........

Hi Zo
Yes, now in receipt of the new SOTA beam and pole. This will be packed away ready for use on the Gibraltar trip in conjunction with the FT-857, the WASP Special and a Leki pole. Looking forward to some good VHF contacts into North Africa, especially Morocco and of course Spain.
Our next outing hopefully will be on Sunday, 7th January 2007 onto Lambrigg Fell LD-046. where two of the local lads and myself hope to activate this summit and blow out the cobwebbs of Xmas and New Year festivities. Hope to use 2m FM/SSB and HF possibly on the 20m band.

Sounds like your just about ready for the trip Ian... Hope it's a good one and hope you have many contacts. I will listen out for you on Lambrigg Fell on Sunday 7th Jan...I haven't been able to do much in the way of listening because just before christmas den moved the radio shack up stairs. I had my radio on the kitchen table where it was handy with kitchen being a centre point for family life..etc. etc. Den suggested yesterday that I might like a radio here in the living room at the side of the pc on a shelf...I was so pleased when he suggested this because when it's sorted I can keep up with the forum's and chase SOTA....

Hi Zo
The set-up with the radio in close proximity to the PC can prove dividends, especially when monitoring the SOTA Spots/Alerts, DX Clusters or when using QRZ.COM in QSO etc. Just watch out for TVI with the PC. Up until the middle of last year I used the small third bedroom as the shack. Since then we have had a purpose built building constructed at the rear of the house, full width of the property. One half serves as a utility room for the XYL, the other the shack so I have room for radios, PC, laptop, TV etc, makes a difference.

Wow that sounds great Ian, it's good when you can sort something out like an extra building. We have a four bedroomed house but with 6 children all rooms are being used at the moment. Our bedroom is the main shack but because it isn't great on size I feel I would rather have a radio back down here. Certainly will be good for keeping an ear on the SOTA and on the Spots/Alerts etc
