For some reason my ATU isn't matching up my longwire, I am wondering if I should dump a balun into the mix. Currently its a decent lump of wire around 40' up, connected direct to the centre of my Coax the braiding further down is attached to an earth rod. on LF I can get a match of 3.1 but on everything else its almost infinite. I know its probably a really stupid question but as I've said before I am not a HF bod I am a VHF one

Hi Martin, Hmm interesting problem, most ATU's have a 4:1 balun built in my MFJ 949E has. Perhaps you could earth the coax at the antenna feedpoint,as well as to an earth rod as i have; try setting up the wire as an inveted L, with the vertical atabout 30ft in lenght and earth the coax braid at the feedpoint at ground level as well as at the radio end. my wire is about 83ft long and it tunes on most bands.
73's de Den.

Will have to get some ladders but I will give that a try its already L shaped, I hadn't thought of earthing the feedpoint uptop though
