I am looking for a HF rig, that is capable both as Mobile and Base, I had a Icom 7000 for about a week when it failed, so I am not sure if thats even a rig to consider, but it could be just 1 dodgy unit. I've looked at the Kenwood TS2000 (with 23cm) the aforementioned Icom and a few yaesus any thoughts would be appreciated. Obviously this is going to be a do or die rig, and has to last me a few years (poss more)

One of our radios is a Yaesu ft-840, that is small enough where it would work mobile.
It is about 23cm/9in wide 23cm/9in deep and about 9cm/3.5in high.

Ft 840 great for mobile....Kenwood 2000 good radio..the thing is there are that many to choose from! I know a good few that use the 2000 and are very happy with it.I suppose it depends on how big of a radio you would want with wanting it for mobile use a swell.I only use base radios that wouldn't be of any use in a mobile,..these days!!

Well as long as the rig in question has a remote head I can fit the rest of the rig in without an issue, so thats not really a concern. I don't want a Deaf rig, nor do I want one thats non featured if you know what I mean.

Try an FT857 with the separation kit.
Had a Kenwood 2000X for a couple of months but found it very deaf on VHF in comparison to the Trio 711 or the IC910X

Actually I was considering an 897 as well, but again wasn't quite sure, I might pop down to Waters and Stanton and compare them myself :Z who knows as of yet, I am still a week of getting the cash together which way

Hi Martin, Did you manage to decide which radio to go for and did you get it?
