Well today has been a total landmark for me and I am so pleased with myself ;D About 28 years ago I was involved in a road accident in which I was knocked off my cycle and ended up in hospital for two weeks recovering and leading to me having my leg in plaster for nearly a year. I had to have an operation after 7 months because my bones were not healing. I had a bone graft from my hip to my broken bones. Since then I was so scared of getting back onto a cycle and always envied those that could even my kids... sad or what ? After buying two bikes on Friday one for me and one for my daughter Stacey and waiting for them to arrive which they did today... We went into the park and I started riding my bike. Albeit a little wobbly here and there but the main thing was I did it and I am so happy. I played for about 10 to 15 mins and Stacey was so impressed. She was behind me and said I only wobbled a little and should be able to get my confidence up in the next couple of weeks. So am feeling like I am well on the road to beating a fear ;D Zo ~ 2E0ZLD

That's too bad Renae. How about in the later part of the year? By the way this reminds me-when I was growing up in Itasca we would ride bikes all the way to Franklin Park via Rte 19 (Irving Park Rd.) and back with a stop at O'hare to watch the jets land over us! I had a Schwinn Collegiate 5-speed-nice bugundy. Used to use Dad's car wax on it-my bike made my friends' more expensive 10-15 speed bikes look like crap:)

No traffic laws obeyed, horrible lack of manners etc. Besides the U.S. passed a law you MUST wear a helmet...never did when I was a kid. That's a drag

Hi Everyone and Thanks To You All Renae I am really sorry to hear that you suffer from allergies like that. It must not be very nice for you at all and I wish that it could get better for you my friend. I bought some accessories for the bike today and I must admit that a helmet was not one of them. I think it is law really here too Frank but I haven't bought one yet because I am not planning on going on the roads yet not till I feel more confident on that side of things. I got the usual lights, puncture kit etc. I will mostly cycle along the canal to start with because in either direction I will end up at supermarkets just depends how long a cycle I want at the time... hee hee.

Last night after reading and reading info on various sites I came across some info which actually said it is not a law in this country to have to wear a helmet which at first surprised me because I thought if there was a law able to be put up for something here it would be. On further reading I discovered that these helmets can only really protect you from a kerb hit and would be really useless against anything such as a car hit etc. Wow you learn something new.. Yesterday I was on the bike for half an hour getting used to turning to the left then the right ect and gentle figure of eights. Next I am going to suss these gears out because I struggle on the inclines. Declines not such a problem but still a little wobbly.. It will all come in time though Renae, We have bike paths dotted about the whole country but would you believe it not so many here were we are. Down where my sister lives they have them all over the place and she can cycle for miles without going on a road full of traffic... beginning to wish I lived there. hee hee

Yes I agree with this comment Renae, You can still wipe out on a decline and declines is definitely the one for me to be ever so cautious with... I think I will be forever as it was a decline that I was on when I had the accident all those 28 yrs ago. However as Frank quite correctly commented it is great exercise and one that I think I will grow to appreciate more as the weeks and months go on...
