Besides Amateur Radio what other hobbies/interests do you have?
I also volunteer at the local zoo I am into my 20th year I started in 1987. I love animals and nature I enjoy being at the zoo each week, each time is a little different which is nice.

A most excellent hobby to have Renae I admire people like yourself who work with zoo animals etc., I should imagine that it is really hardwork but none the less enjoyable My own hobby aside from radio is Photography. I am however contemplating getting a knitting machine. I used to have one years ago but a busy family life gave me no time to do much so I sold my machine in the end.

I don't always get to work with animals that is only if keeprs need an extra hand.
I am in the building with animals (usually) with specimins of some sort things like animal hides (giraffe, okapi, elephant wolf etc, elephant tusk, elephant tooth, snake skull bones, turtle shell etc).
I have helped medicate sick frogs, helped the dolphins with shape discrimination, done animal observations, hleped get together animal behavioral enrichment items ( stuffed burlap sacks with camel fur for the Lions and tigers, etc).

I was watching a program on zoo's the other night and found it most interesting. They were finding things they could do to stop the leopard from being board and stressed. It was amazing the things that they came up with like spraying perfume on logs. This kept the leopard busy with rubbing up against the smell to cover it with her own scent. It really did the job.

Yes they do have to find behavioral enrichment for the animals in captivitiy so they don't become bored, while they are safe from the environment, predators, himans etc, they have a lot less space than out in the wild.

I think that all other things set aside this is probably the one main problem with Zoo's. However I am not against them at all because their intentions are good and they are trying to preserve animals that would otherwise be extinct now if they weren't there.

Thats such a shame Renae, Kingfishers are one of my favourite birds. I was only thinking the other day how I could set things up to photograph one. They fly so fast near to the water that one second you see it and then the next it's gone.

Thats brilliant news about the Micronisian Kingfishers Renae. It makes me wonder how many species of animals aren't on view to the public in our own zoo's.
