As female what made you decide to become licensed?
Dave has always been interedest in Amateur radio and SWl ever since he was a kid. when I met him back in the early 80's he was always listening never did get licensed
then one day I said how difficult could it really be if you want to become licensed I will too. So we both studied for ( and obviously) passed our Technician Class, then General Class then Morse Code then last November or final Amateur Extra.

Wow Renae that isn't so different to how I got interested and became licenced. I met Den also in the early 80's... Early 83... Den had a Yaesu FRG and he used to like listening on there. I also enjoyed listening too and he had a Cobra Radio that had sideband etc...but that was more of a CB radio and I wasn't too impressed with CB (Citizens Band). A couple of years ago he mentioned the possibility of taking the M3 course and he said it would be great if I would do it with him...I agree'd and whalla! here we both are

Don't get me wrong I think there are some perfectly good people who use CB but the majority unfortunately tend to get rather daft on there. I don't particularly wish to listen to a group of people hurling verbal abuse and giving each other a hard time with keying up over the top of each other etc. This is why I opted in for becoming a Radio Amateur, the ettiquet is far better and on the whole people tend to stick with the rules.

I am not saying all people who use CB are that way because they aren't all that way but generally most are rude and use a lot of profanity. I too felt that Amateur Radio has more ettiquet ( though not always it isnt perfect either) and they tend to follow rules more.

Amateur Radio for me was certainly the better option and the plus side is that there are more bands and frequencies available so when conditions are not good on one there is the possibility of making contacts on one of the other bands

If I pass the 2E0 exam, there isn't really any extra bands to have a go at but I think there are more modes to have a try at such as Satellite, Ritty and PSK31. I don't know anyone who uses these other modes as yet so not sure what they entail. It would be good if the club could run user awareness courses on these modes so you can see what is involved before you decide if you want to purchase any extra equipment needed before giving it ago. The other advantage of course is the extra power that you are allowed to use 50Watts instead of the 10Watts you're allowed as an M3.

here you can use all modes at all levels, you get more bands the higher the level.
I don't think I would ever use RTTY PSK31 slow scan etc.ever.

I think I would definately like to see these other modes in use for myself but not sure that I would use them either.

A couple of the committee members at the local radio club actually suggested that perhaps it would be good if the club could set these different modes up for people to see them in action for themselves. I thought that it would be a very good idea and hope that they pursue it more.

I think that would be good and interesting. I know when we were taking the Extra Lucense Class there was a man in the class that was really into satelite and he did a demo. One of the instructors was into RTTY and another was into slow scan and had some photos.

I think that doing something similar at our own club is a definate to consider in the future. At the moment we have been messed about with suitable rooms at the college where we are based. We haven't even been able to put up antenna's. I think it might be a wise suggestion for us to move to a different location completely where we may have more freedom to put up antenna's, use pc's and internet and various other forms of Radio Usage such as RTTY, PSK etc.
