just got home been gone most of the day, I think I missed the time frame. I would take a listen on 20 meters to see if I could hear.

I missed Ian because by the time I got to switch the radio on...it was after 12.30 p.m. I did manage to get my first two SOTA contacts though in 6 months....one of which was M1AVV/P - Simon on Whit Barrow and I also got Bill - G4KKI/P on Pendle Hill

Activation ReportUp early, weather checked, overcast, windy, but no rain, so it was a goer! Car packed with all the necessary equipment to include the FT-8900 quad band and the tri-band mobile whip with mag-mount on the car roof and left home at approximately 0930 hours heading for Jim 2E1EER’s QTH to pick both Jim and Rosie M3OYJ up. Both lads ready and waiting, then onwards to Mark 2E0BDM’s QTH. Picked Mark up and then headed east on the Garstang Road out of Blackpool. Soon reached the A6 and onwards to Junction 33 M6 and northwards towards the Lake District. WX at this time was rain with heavy road spray on the motorway. Approaching Junction 36 we heard Myke G6DDQ/P calling on S20 from Loughrigg Fell LD-047 and went back to him for the SOTA point. In QSO with Myke he informed us that he would not be staying long, only long enough to qualify the summit, reporting heavy driving rain with strong winds. Food for thought for the four of us sitting in the car, no matter, onwards and we would take our chances. Also managed to work Ron G8CXR on the Blackpool repeater (GB3FC) from the M6 at approx Junction 35 and Mel G6SOE in Poulton. On reaching Junction 37 we opted for the northern route in to the summit which was a route down a farm track , or at least it was similar, cow dung everywhere and very narrow with few passing places for vehicles. With visibility very poor with fog/mist the only track/gate we found had a sign on it, ‘NO ACCESS-BULL IN FIELD’…….. we did’nt go there!!!…. Hi! Reversed the way we had come and made for the quarry on the south side where we parked up. WX at this time, no rain but very windy, very foggy/misty, kit on, crossed road and entered gate to fell. Straight onto the well defined grass path and headed due north, visibility 20m. Found utilities building by the gate and then headed east following the wind farm track and walked on that, still no sign of wind turbines! Eventually found one just to the right of the track and another 20m further on we turned left off the track and headed for the summit. Found a location which looked the most suitable, still no rain but strong winds. HF was not an option, to windy for masts, wire dipoles so set up the 2m 3el SOTA beam on the WASP Special attached to the Leki pole. Of course the ‘Jolly Rebel ’was both attached and flown. Managed to qualify the summit very quickly working: · Mel G6SOE Poulton · John G1VGF Poulton · Alan M1DHA Barnoldswick · G0HDX Accrington · Steve M0SGB/P Pendle Hill SP-005 · Bill G4KKI/P Pendle Hill SP-005 · Mike G4BLH Nelson · Simon M1AVV Barrow Sorry for those waiting for us on 20m, just to windy for wire dipoles today. Tried 4m & 6m but no takers and just Mel G6SOE and John G1VGF on 70cms working Jim 2E1EER on his Quasheng 5w handheld, Jim was very impressed with the results 59+ over 60 miles and has vowed to buy the 2m version. Rosie M3OYJ had his first SOTA QSO and summit to summit……… confidence will come! Many thanks to all stations worked.

I find it really interesting why people end up with the nicknames they get. Mine is Left Hand Indicator from the letters of my call sign. I think it was M0SGB that came up with it but I can't say now for sure because I have heard quite a few people say to me when I am chasing an activator 'Ah, Left Hand Indicator', Hee Hee.

Some amateurs like to invent nicknames from the letters of peoples call signs. I never gave it a thought until steven gave me mine. I do however find it interesting what people come up with. Infact it never ceases to amaze me how many interesting things I am finding out due to being a radio amateur

I wonder what people will come up with for my new call sign when I get it If I can't get the one I want I will be sticking with LHI so the nickname obviously will remain the same and I can live with that one
