The SOTA forum www.sotaforum.co.uk decided to organise a sota fun day where all of the South Pennines summits would be activated all at once, the members thought it a good idea and the date was set for 23rd April. Zo and i decided we would activate Pendle hill G/SP-005, the day dawned bright and sunny with a gentle breeze perfect i thought. We set off about nine o clock and drove the 4 miles to the village of Barley and parked up. Pendle hill all 1287ft of it loomed above us, we set off up the track to the steps which have been built into it, about 40 mins of climbing brought us to the summit plateau with the trig point about 300yds ahead. The hill was quite busy with people walking so we couldn't set up at the trig point, so we got sorted about 20yds away, we were using the ft817 with a sota beam on a telescopic pole. So, up went the pole with the aerial vertically polarised, as it was St Georges day we flew the red cross of England flag from it. The activations started at 11.00, a contact rota had been worked out to make things easier our first was G7KXV and 2E0JPI on Snape fell, great one down 15 to go. Eventually we managed to work everybody else, it was a great sense of achievement to know that 17 summits all talking at once. During the day i noticed people coming over for a nosey at what we we doing then standing by the pole and then walking off again strange? it was then that we realised the were having photos taken by the flag . Not only that the local sheep were trying to steal our sandwiches!! when the batteries in the rig died we packed up and left the hill, the day was rounded off by a pint or two of witches brew in the local pub in barley, lovely ;D 73's de Den.

Hi Den
I remember the event, managed to acquire lots of Chaser points on the day and I'm sure all Activators enjoyed a memorable day.
Thinking ahead, would'nt it be nice to have a forum activation on a summit in the coming year, when perhaps the WX is better. Hutton Roof Crag would be ideal. Large car park, easy walk in and the trig point lends itself to puting up masts and a long wire for HF, VHF/UHF. Just a suggestion for a great day out and the opportunity to activate portable in good company.

Hi Zo
Glad that I now have both yourself and Den interested in perhaps a forum activation for 2007. I agree that a few more members to the forum are required in order to put such an activation event to the forum, will place a link to your forum on my own at Totally Portable and see what response you get with regards to new members.

Thank You Very Much Ian, That is most appreciated. I posted a couple of links here and there to the forum yesterday and hope to be able to post one or two more later...See if it gets us noticed. I had a pm the other day and a friend of mine who is a Female American Radio Amateur will hopefully be joining us in the New Year when she gets her Full Call sign...Think its Extra Technicians Class but if I am incorrect please someone post and let me know what the full american course and exam class is... I think a forum activation of a summit would be a first and I would love to be part of something like that..
