Finally I have four meters up and running, on a Philips TETRA radio, it also covers 2m and 70cms with a max (but adjustable output of 25w) I currently have the HALO on the armchair and haven't heard anything on 070.450 so the antenna might not be spotted right, but it will go on the roof this weekend. should do the trick, I am thinking about a 2nd one for the car or fabricating a holder that will hold the FT8900 and the TETRA with power and speaker linkages so that its hot plugable. The only downside of the TETRA is that it uses BNC connectors who in their right minds puts them on a Mobile unit ?

Sounds like a cool possibility-makes me think more about gettin a license and a rig...but to be honest I monitor the hams in the San Francisco area on my scanner and they are an unsavory attitudy lot! too many alliances against each other-is it like that in the U.K.? I doubt .it judging by the group here

Frank, Don't you believe it. As with all things in life where humans have to get together you get what we call over here in UK 'Clickiness', Its like that all over the place, if your face fits then your in... if not then I guess you could say your out. It is same on 2 mtrs here in the uk. I think it is because on 2 mtrs FM it is more localised and line of site so there is more chance of bumping into the people you talk to in real life and that is a bit threatening to most people as even on radio you cannot garauntee that someone is going to be fine and correct. It is a sad state of affairs I know but on the other hand there are just as many nice people to make contact with and get to know. Personally I am glad that I took the first step into the hobby because I would never have met Scott, Janine, Martin and many others who are not members here who are wonderful people. Also I do believe that there are many folks in our localle that have their licences and who don't go to clubs and just work HF so they don't actually get involved with clicks as we call it. Hope that answers your thoughts and doesn't put you off possibly going in for your licence. At our club you have to be a member to take the Foundation Course but after you have got your licence you never have to go back to the club if you don't want to unless you want to progress up the ladder and take the other two exams.

I doubt .it judging by the group here Yeah, go for it... I looked at the U.S. exams and getting a start on the bands doesn't look much different over there in terms of what you need to know. As to idiots, you'll always get them amongst a big group of people but don't be fooled into thinking they are numerous...they just shout louder and more fequently than the good ops ;D It's the same on the web, you look at some of the amateur radio groups (u.k.radio.amateur srings to mind) and you'll get the wrong impression of what it is really like on the bands... 3 or 4 sad old men who rarely even get on air, posting vitriol all the time, which gives a totally false impression to anyone reading. As to buying equipment... plenty of online sellers who will be happy to have your $$ ;D I used to have 3 amateur radio shops within 20 miles, but now there is just one left (a good one though). cheers, Andy

Thats the problem we have, the lack of amateur shops. The nearest to us I think is Barnsley area which is quite a way when you don't have transport. However like you said Andy and Frank there are always internet shops which you can get radio's from. Thankfully

Thankfully I'm currently tracking, with intent!!, an FT-736R on ebay ... you take your chance on there but if they have a callsign, it's a bit of insurance, reassurance. cheers, Andy

You are quite right Andy, Den and Me have bought radio's from JunkSale a couple of times and we haven't been sorry. There is something reassuring in knowing your buying from an amateur.

I missed out on the FT-736 on ebay in a last 20 seconds fight-out... the winning bid was only £10 more than mine, but he could well of had a top bid well over that. It still went for a good price... one school of thought is 'don't lose it for the sake of a bid', the other is 'don't go above the price you've set in your own mind'... basically I'm kicking myself

I think that is just one problem with ebay your sort of miscellaneously arguing with an annonymous buyer... lol whose gonna quit first us or them.... Oh well I am sorry you didn't win the bid Andy and hope you find another and this time win the item Will keep fingers crossed for you
