I've been reliably informed that many SOTA activators are using a BOTHY bag type shelter, one demonstrated on Richard's G3CWI video clip. Has any forum member got one, used one for portable operation? I would like to know if they are worth purchasing, supposed to be warm, wet-proof & wind-proof, although wind noise can be a problem when transmitting from the interior.
I would want a 2 man Bothy, best place to buy, website address would be great and of course price........
Look forward to others comments.

Hi Ian, without sounding un-intelligent could you please tell me what BOTHY stands for because I haven't heard this term before. I think the closest I can imagine them to be is like the Fishing Bivvy's that are available. I know about these because me and Den have both had one in the past for when we have done overnight Carp fishing...lol..sorry for showing my naievity.

Hi Zo No problem at all. Basically its a portable shelter, often refered to as a group shelters or bothy bags and essentially they do just that - they provide shelter from the elements in the event of a storm or a lunch break or maybe someone fell and is immobile and one of these could protect them while you wait for help. Apparently though it is small when packed, lightweight and you can operate from within but wind noise during transmission can be a problem. Try this link to explain all: www.oneoutdoors.co.uk/product.php/60/7/Hope this helps..........

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BothyI have a Bothy Bag but have not used it yet - part of my safety equipment for SOTA activations. It weighs about 300g and can shelter 2 people. Basically the bag has two reinforced areas which you sit on and then pull tha bag over you. There are vents to stop condensation and give air flow. Some even have a window panel

They sound great Roger. Me and Den mostly activate together and one of those would certainly be very handy. Something for the equipment shopping list. The link was most interesting. I think these building type Bothy's are something that I will be keeping an eye out for on future activation expeditions. It might be interesting to see if I can build up a list of where they are so in future if emergency accomodation is needed then I know where to head.

Useable Bothies are mainly in Scotland Zo. Most of the ones marked on maps in England and Wales are sadly derelict :-(

Awe what a shame Roger Would have been something interesting to keep an eye open for. I have been up Scotland twice in the last 15 months but alas not for SOTA activating. Next time we go up to the Orkney Islands we are going to be better kitted out but don't think we will do much good in the way of 2mtrs FM because there is such a lot of interference from somewhere on the Island or something for that matter. Not sure what it was but one thing I can say is it was very very noisey. We may do better on SSB though and of course HF is ok which will be a definate. M3LHI ~ Zo
